A new day has come.

So unlike many other places, the Sphere doesn’t celebrate New Years on New Year’s Eve. Instead they celebrate it in s three day festival commencing on January first to the third. The festival starts on the first at dawn with people waking up early to watch the first unofficial sunrise in the Sphere. Unlike most other days, this sunrise is universal, moving into each of the domes and filling them with such a bright light that it looks like an idealized version of a bright summer’s day. Groups of people join together to watch it in the dormitory dorms as well as in several public areas. The agriculture dome and the recreational domes are popular places for such activities and there are several places where there appear to be flowers blooming and almost the sound of birdsong.

Also in the more public places, there are large tables filled up with what seems to be a standard light breakfast of fruit, cheese and various loaves of bread, including a particular loaf of bread that everyone is given either in their attendance or in the dome itself. It’s a circular loaf with nuts on it that’s perfect for sharing. Indeed people keep trying to share a piece with the characters around them.

One thing that’s missing though? None of the places seem to have any sort of caffeine in any form. If questioned about it, someone knowledgeable will respond: “you can’t have caffeine until the sun sets!” The words come with a good natured laugh and characters are then handed a glass of fruit juice.

Out with the old and in with the new.

As the sun is about to set on the first day, crowds gather in the rec dome. There in the middle of the area there’s a large bonfire set up. The smoke billows up towards the top of the dome before it disappears. People gathered around the fires are throwing old possessions into it, some of which are their own and some of them are the possessions of the people who had left. The idea is to unburden yourself of things to face the new year with a clean slate.

There are smaller fires around, and they burn different colors with the smoke being sweet smelling and light. Some people show the newcomers how to gather the smoke in their hands and release it over their heads, in order to clear out dark thoughts and whatever is troubling people. The smoke gives people a slight feeling of euphoria, and makes them feel as if whatever is happening isn’t quite as bad as they think it is.

And we’re dancing through life.

On the second day, the public domes are fairly dead. The merchant dome is closed and only a few restaurants are open, and only those are for delivery. The entire city almost seems to be holding their breath and waiting for something. When the clock turns to eight pm, it’s almost as if the entire city is lit in a combination of stars and candlelight. In the gardens in the Rec dome, a large ball has been set up. Everyone in the city has been given their ideal fancy dress outfit, including mask in order to wear to it. The idea behind it is that the characters are in the middle of their transitional state. Day one was the day they put their old life behind them, and day three will be the day that they form their new selves for the year ahead. Which is why at the ball, people wear masks and have the option to give into some of the things that they wouldn’t normally do.

Wanna eat that there whole pint of ice cream? Go nuts. Wanna drink a bottle of vodka? Hey it’s your liver and it’s not like you can die! Wanna hook up in a dark corner with a stranger. It’s your life and there’s some nice velvet couches over there; out of sight and out of mind.

Dinner is in the form of an elaborate meal, sort of along the idea of Fat Tuesday in New Orleans, no expense is spared and everything is extremely well done and extravagant. Rich food, insane desserts, open bar, everything this night is too excess. At various points in the evening, the sky which has been showing stars shifts into things like fireworks, and glowy nebuleuses, causing people to burst into spontaneous bouts of applause.

All the while, there are various and shifting dance floors with an assortment of music to dance to, including classical, swing, fiddles, big band, pop, R&B, and basically anything that you can think of. The dances that people do there are as varied as the population, the drunkenness level and of course the all important dances of people's native Caucasia.

The party goes until dawn, at which point, the drunken releveries spill onto the streets, and people return to their personal domes singing loudly and off key.

...Is that… a squirrel?

For anyone who has been in the Sphere for any sort of length of time, one thing has stood out: there are no living creatures within the Sphere other than the people themselves. All of the meat has been generated versus harvested, and there’s not even bugs involved. Of course, all of that changes when there’s suddenly a random black squirrel darting in among the trees of the park in the recreational dome. It’s not frightened of people for the most part, unless someone tries to touch it. Then you better hope to god you’re a bard or you’ve got some ranks in handle animal, but this thing does not want to be touched.

Yeah, people who make the effort are going to get bitten or scratched. Yeah, that kinda looks infected. You may wanna see someone about it. Or hope really hard. But either way, at least the clinic is there for you.

Wildcard
Choose your own adventure. Some suggestions: network posts, roommates meeting, before the party, randomly interacting with shops or restaurants, trying to find a job, etc. Go nuts.

Rick Grimes ( The Walking Dead )

[personal profile] redhandle 2018-12-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A. New Day

Rick is awake early but it's not for the purpose of watching the sunrise or what not even though it ends up happening. He's not particularly paying that much attention to it, though. His mind is still elsewhere as he makes his way around.

Hunger does make itself known, being the main reason he'd gotten up and out so early in the first place. He doesn't accept any bread from those offering it, but he does take some fruit, cheese and bread and finds a place to settle and eat, keeping an eye on his surroundings. He's observing but he's not unfriendly or unwelcoming if someone looks his way or joins him.

B. Out with the Old

[ Rick has nothing to add to the fire that is being started but he is there all the same. It's interesting to watch what people give up but he doesn't particularly have anything that he's willing to let go of and there is very little he has in the first place and it'd been that way for some time now.

There is plenty of internal baggage that would have been good to burn but that's harder than the material.

Rick watches as someone is shown some ritual with one of the smaller fires, looking at it curiously and then shaking his head doubtfully as he overheard the explanation. ]

Rhys is the textbook definition of Not a Morning Person. Sure, he's dressed and groomed, but he looks none too pleased as he sits and munches on an apple. He hardly spares a glance at the man that takes a seat near him.

"Awful of 'em to not give us coffee, isn't it? My old boss was a tyrant, but he never denied us caffeine like this. Those of us in higher ranks even had personal coffee makers at our desks," he gripes.

[In all honesty, Aaron isn't sure how he feels about the strange ritual, either, but that isn't going to stop him from satisfying his curiosity, and he's not surprised to find Rick there as well. Assessing their surroundings was always Rick's number one priority.

He falls into line beside the man, shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants as he does.

Gyda ragnarsdottir: vikings (crau from riverview)

[personal profile] like_quicksilver 2018-12-25 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Just voice testing, may not app

A new day
Gyda's up early just on habit. Even after months in Riverview, she could never get over years of waking up at dawn. She does notice something strange about the sunset, and gatherings around food are even done at home.

The clothing provided for her reminds her of home-her first home in Kattegat-though the colors and fabric are too well made to be from there, but they still give her a sense of homesickness that's become all too familiar. This is a new world, and however strange it might be, it was a chance she might never get back in Kattegat-or even in Helheim.

Plate and drink in hand, she looks around for a place to sit and enjoy the view.

Squirrel
Having grown up and helped raise animals her entire life, Gyda knew from almost the first day that there were none in any of the Domes she'd visited. This unnerved her more than anything; even in Riverview, even on another planet there were animals of sorts, however none she knew the immediate names for.

She saw the black squirrel in passing, and her curiousity's peaked enough to try and follow it. The creature's clearly scared, and even when she gets close enough to it, Gyda wonders at what sort of health condition it might be in-clearly not good. Having grown up on a farm, she knows how to handle skittish animals, especially ones extra fearful from sickness or injury. She knows they don't like to be handled, and often need a form of covering around their eyes to keep them from thrashing out.

The only thing in way of a covering she had was a jacket, and she quickly took it off, keeping her eye on it. She then moved forward, keeping quiet and steady-before quickly throwing the jacket over it. The creature struggled as she tried to gather it around her, hoping it wouldn't hurt itself from thrashing.

She held it out in a bundle, praying it wouldn't scratch or bite through the fabric. "I have a sick animal here." She called out to the nearest person she could see. "Is there an animal doctor around?"

Maybe a human one as well, given the scratches on her hands.

rick glanced at the other and well he’s grown accustomed to not always having things like coffee so he hadn’t thought of it too deeply in all reality but he can still understand the sentiment.

“It is a bit weird,” he chuckled. “It probably could be worse, though.”

At least there was plenty of food after all.

"At least it isn't even a full day." The man's right. It could be worse. He could still be out in the Pandoran desert, running for his life from all manner of beasts and bandits. He finally glances over.

"I'm Rhys." He extends his flesh hand for a handshake.

Happy New Year, I guess. It doesn’t really feel like it should be.

[ Not that the passage of time really made much sense back home anymore either but this has a bit of an almost jarring affect on perception of reality. It’s probably to be expected. ]

Squirrel

[personal profile] customplates 2018-12-27 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In the time Aaron's been trapped in the domes, one thing has been clear: there are no animals here. The food they eat is manufactured, there aren't even any pets that he's seen, so when a young girl approaches him with what appears to be an ill squirrel, he's fascinated along with everything else. That interest is put on hold of course, for want of taking care of the girl.

He crouches to get a better look at her, and at the bundle she's cradling so carefully.

"I don't think there are any animal doctors here. Where did you find that little guy?"

New Years? [He shakes his head, crossing his arms.] Not at all.

[But he does turn his gaze back to the crowds and rolls his shoulder in a slight shrug.]

As for the ceremony...sure? There are a lot of cultures on Earth who have similar practices: symbolically letting go of the old and welcoming the new.

The dark cover helped to calm the creature down, but Gyda was still careful in how she held him. They could still claw and bite after all.

"He was in one of the forest domes," She answered. "I've worked with animals long enough to tell this one needs care."

Animals only attacked when scared, wounded or hungry. There was likely the squirrel was all three, but she needed to see if it was hurt first. "This place has nuts, right? It might be hungry."

He might also take a look at the various scratches and bites on her hands and arms.

Beverly knew that it was unlikely that Gyda was the same person as there had been in Riverview, but she couldn't help but hope that she was. It seemed cruel to her, really to have their been so many people who had been there that were here now and didn't know her. But she was going to try anyway, because she couldn't help it. Surely one person needed to be who they were, right? Just one? So Bev picked up her fruit and her bread and she heads over to her friend, gesturing towards a table.

"Over here." The words are quick and there's no denying the hope that was in them to go along with the smile that she gave Gyda.

She was still looking for a place when she heard a familiar voice, turning towards its direction and seeing a familiar shade of red hair. "Beverly!"

In any strange world, familiar faces were welcomed. She hurried her steps, navigating the benches. "You were pulled here as well?"

There's hope in her voice; Bev wouldn't have been the only one to find familiar faces that didn't know her.

Lyndon (The Scoundrel) | Diablo III

[personal profile] thescoundrel 2018-12-31 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
A. A new Day

There are very few things that can keep Lyndon away from free food. Oh, wait. There were none. The thief couldn't say he often made a habit of attending festivals in the open, normally keeping more to the shadows was all the better to liberating people of their coin purses after all. Normally, he also wasn't generally keen on waking so early, but this world promised many things, being devoid of demons chiefly among them, and so there he was, collecting breads and pocketing them for later, partaking of fruits and cheeses he'd never heard of, sipping a strange citrus juice that seemed to be named for its color...

Eventually, he has a seat at a table to the side, his back to the glass walls of the dome, where he helps himself to his spoils and watches those gathered. He has a friendly smile and a nod for anyone who might decide to join him. No one needs to know he's scouting those at the gathering after all.

Wildcard I. Out and About

[The market offers the thief an amalgam of opportunity, but he hasn't evaded capture this long for lack of cunning. There are contraptions here he's never seen, store owners seem to be much better at keeping an eye on their patrons than he's ever experienced. He needs a partner. He'll share, of course, whatever spoils they may muster, but he needs someone who knows the lay of the land.

Well, he'll share if they're aware they're aiding him in anything nefarious at least. Not only a thief, but also a con man, he steps beside someone who may be walking along.
]

Good afternoon. You seem to know your way about this place. I'm woefully new and in desperate need of a friend.

[He offers a hand, even, and a friendly smile.]

My name is Lyndon.

Wildcard II. Audio - UN: ofKingsport

While I'm not sure how I feel about this little contraption it is useful, isn't it? We only need to touch it, and our thoughts are projected however we want to everyone. What sort of thoughts, you ask?

[There's something like a mischievous chuckle across the telepathic feed, and vague hints at something equal parts delightful and sinful, use your imagination.]

Naughty, naughty. We've only just met! Who are my neighbors, anyway? We live in a reverse fishbowl, after all. May as well know one another. For instance, my name is Lyndon and I hail from the city of Kingsport, a port city and trade hub that attracts all sorts from pirates to merchant princes and always smells of rotting fish! Quite a charming and sprawling city, Kingsport, but it is home.

He nods at the girl, but doesn't reach for the cloth. She seems fairly protective of the squirrel (if it really is a squirrel) and he doesn't want to impact that.

And she needed aid herself, which was troubling.

Bev just breathed a long and slow sigh of relief, letting it rush over her tongue for a moment before she reached out and carefully hugged her friend. The care was only for the food that the girl was carrying and not because of any sort of change in how Beverly felt about her. "Yeah," the word was quick, and spoken with a grin.

"I was there in Riverview and now I'm here. Stan's here too but he wasn't in Riverview. And there's a couple more people who have the same faces and are the same people but they definitely weren't." She frowned for a moment, and shook her head. "It's weird in some ways. Like a lot of ways."

She returned the embrace as best she could (which admittedly wasn't much given what she was holding). That Bev remembered her was a boon in this place and helped with the stranger.

"I thought I would stay in Riverview," She said when they both pulled away. "But then the option to travel to a new world was offered, and this would've been the only time to explore another world. It's strange, but Riverview was strange as well and I didn't mind that."

She looked for a place the two of them could sit, frowning at her expression. "Is there something I need to know?"

In the short time she's known her, she could count on Bev for one thing-she was always honest and blunt in her answers. In a new world, that was something she could appreciate, especially if Bev had been there longer than she had.

Seregil | The Nightrunners Series

[personal profile] of_bokthersa 2019-01-06 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
A new day
Everything here was curious. It was full of strange clothing and rituals that Seregil wasn't used to. There were no crowded streets, none of the bustling that he was used to, and most importantly, nothing like where he had just been. He'd just been tucking his procured coin underneath his clothing after freshening up at a stream and being convinced to take the young man he'd just saved with him. Now he was standing amongst strange people in a crowded area that looked nothing like anything he'd ever seen before.

That, of course, didn't stop him from being curious. With the cursed coin tucked neatly under his clothing he began to walk in and among the people, taking in their dress and mannerisms and adopting them as he went. It was easiest, after all, to understand a new place when you were inconspicuous. As he continued to mingle, listening to parts of conversations, he began procuring articles of clothing and changing them out for different parts of his wardrobe. By the end, he's looking decidedly well put together (due to his discerning eye and the fact that it's all black pieces), even if the outfit seems far less to his taste than if he were wearing something from home that wasn't a costume.

Out with the old
The bonfires were interesting, as was the meaning of them. He had a passing thought to try and destroy the coin in one, but Nysander needed it, and that was more important. Instead, he found himself a glass of whatever passed for good alcohol and began to interact.

Dancing
Seregil had opted not to partake in the ball part of the festivities, even if entering his 'room' had offered him a better set of clothing options. Especially in the way of festive wear. He did, however, opt for the dress clothing that had been present in the room. Especially during the all too familiar festival. Food and drink flowing like water was something he was used to, and it didn't take him long to be completely integrated and enjoying himself. Even if the people here seemed to be stranger than he'd met in quite some time. Their food and their drink were good, and that was all that mattered at the moment.
